History & Tradition
The roots of OertelCrystal in Haida
The history of Oertel begins in 1869 in Haida, today’s Nový Bor. For centuries, the North Bohemia region has been one of the most significant centers of European glass production, shaping generations of glass cutters, painters, engravers, and finishers.
In this environment, a company emerged whose name remains synonymous with crystal glass, glass design, and precision craftsmanship. The proximity to the workshops of North Bohemia formed the foundation for a development that would reach far beyond the region.
Return to the origins
Since 2000, many of Oertel’s pieces have once again been created where the company’s history began: in the glass region around Nový Bor.
Collaboration with specialized glassworks, cutting workshops, and artisans makes it possible to combine traditional techniques with contemporary design.
The emphasis is not on industrial production, but on close cooperation with people whose knowledge and expertise have been passed down through generations.
Oertel today
Today, OertelCrystal forms a link between historic glassmaking traditions and contemporary design.
OertelCrystal’s own designs, the selection of suitable materials and the supervision of each stage of production form the basis of every piece. Production is carried out in collaboration with specialised partners in the historic glassmaking region of Northern Bohemia.
The company’s history is therefore more than a memory: it remains part of a living and continuing tradition.
