Farbige Kristallglasobjekt im Kühlofen einer Glashütte

Crystal Glass and Design since 1869

Specialist crystal glass workshops are central to OertelCrystal’s work. This is where original designs, carefully selected materials and traditional glass-finishing techniques come together. Working with experienced glass finishers, glassworks and master craftspeople results in pieces that combine artisanal precision with contemporary design.

Joh. Oertel & Co. was founded in 1869 in Haida, a centre of Bohemian glassmaking now known as Nový Bor. After the Second World War, the company established a new home in Welzheim in southern Germany. Since 2000, many pieces have once again been produced in the historic glassmaking region of Northern Bohemia – where the story of Oertel began.

Working with specialised glass workshops makes it possible to bring together a range of skills and expertise. Glassmaking, cutting, engraving, glass painting and gilding are undertaken by craftspeople with extensive experience of this demanding material. OertelCrystal oversees the entire production process – from its own designs and the selection of the glass through to the final inspection of each completed piece.

The result is crystal glass that visibly reflects its artisanal origins while expressing a contemporary design language. The following sections offer insights into the history, working methods, international collaborations and presence of OertelCrystal in exhibitions and museums.
